    Do You Live-to-Eat or Eat-to-Live?

I will never forget having a conversation with a friend of mine in university. He said that if he could, he would take a pill each morning to sustain him so he wouldn’t have to worry about eating. To him, preparing meals and eating was a time consuming inconvenience that he would be willing to skip altogether if possible. My mind was boggled! That thought had never ever crossed my mind. I likely fall on the opposite end of the spectrum from my friend- I am in the group of the food obsessed. When is my next meal? What are we eating? Cooking show on TV, I’m watching. Why don’t…

Summer Cocktails: Aperol Spritz and Negroni

I am not typically a cocktail person. That all changed during our honeymoon to Italy. I fell in love with two cocktails: the Aperol spritz and the Negroni. They are both incredibly refreshing for a hot evening on a patio. Now every time I have one, it magically transports me back to an evening in Florence. Both are super easy to make and don’t require a cocktail shaker or any special equipment. As an added bonus, both cocktails could be made in a large batch in a pitcher for a party instead of making everyone an individual cocktail to order. I would highly recommend making them for a get-together as…

    The Summer Salad

Let me introduce you to the BEST summer salad. If summer had a “taste”, it would have to be this combo of in season tomatoes, peaches and basil. When I first heard about combining tomatoes and peaches in a salad, I was skeptical to say the least… it just didn’t sound like they would go together. I was most definitely mistaken – it may be my favourite combo of all time. I make this salad all summer long while peaches and tomatoes are in season. I make it as a side for dinner when we have people over, and even to bring to work for lunch. It is so easy…

The Wine List: The Best Bang for Your Buck Wines

I am a wine lover. I love the flavours, tasting notes, trying new wines and sipping old favourites. However, I also love saving money. My whole family is of the mind that there is no greater joy than finding a great bang-for-your-buck wine. We all share new discoveries and recommendations. I also always get asked by friends to recommend good wines at a reasonable price point. Tori and I compiled a list of our favourites and why they are a part of our core rotation. All of the wines listed are under $20, available at the LCBO and some even at a grocery store. They are easy to find, easy…

Halt the Hangry Banana Bread Recipe

Want to know a secret? I never follow recipes. As long as I can remember, I have been making on the fly adjustments to baking recipes to make them less of a dessert and more of a snack. Why you ask? As a girl who is perpetually hungry (and hangry), a dessert-type bread or muffin is going to keep me full, functioning and pleasant for all of 20 minutes. Making it more substantial allows it to act as an actual snack that keeps me going for hours. So needless to say, this is not your mom’s banana bread recipe. Hot tip: A slice of this bread toasts up BEAUTIFULLY in…

    The Platter Salad

When hosting the fam or friends for dinner, I always break out this salad. For some reason, making a well thought-out salad on a platter instead of a bowl makes it look so much more special! You can definitely apply the platter idea to any salad of your choosing. We’ve done caesar, california steak, and caprese as platter salads – the possibilities are endless! It’s also a great way of serving a “meal salad” since it magically makes a bunch of veggies, herbs, protein and crunchies of your choosing look like a composed dish. This particular salad, now known as “Spencer’s salad” in my family, is my go-to as a…

    A Watched Pot Never Boils…

A watched pot never boils…but an electric kettle does! Want to know the best trick for getting that GD pasta water to boil? Cheat! Either boil all the water in the electric kettle then transfer to an already warm pot. Or if you need even more water, do as much as will fit in the kettle and the rest in the pot. It will get that pasta off the stove and onto your plate so much faster! It’s the perfect trick for an after work “hangry” emergency.  Do you have any other “cheat” tricks in the kitchen? I’d love to hear!
